So, it's aweapon to be used in conjunction woth poison Thus, a weapon that only an assassin would have (carried in a backpack and a just reward for visiting E-C.) Because the weapons are relatively useless unless used with expensive poisons I rule that only drow sergeants and lieutenants (3-4th level fighters) or greater have them. Mind flayers don't fit into that category but humans, demi-humans and most humanoids do. This goes along with the idea that drow are slavers and are not interesting in killing those they come across that may be enslaved (i.e., most humanoids). It can't be dual-used unless on a one-shot, then drop basis.īecause the drow hand x-bows only do d3 damage the only advantage that such devices would have is that the owners have specialized, poisoned and/or magicked bolts and they wish to capture, incapacitate or kill targets at close range There is literally no other reason for such a weapon to exist. The type of self cocking in the first link is the only thing that produces enough poundage to be useful, yet leave the other hand relatively free to wield a buckler or another weapon. The crossbows would have to be of this type ( ) in order to be effective up to a distance of about 60' but also allow for quick reloading These types look more interesting, but are not at all effective and impossible to reload ( ). I'd say that any Drow that could, if permitted by their class, would. Yes and the Type V demon is an example.ĥ. Yes, I would treat it like dual weapons including penalties.Ģ. Roll d100, if result is under 50, then have it be 50% if it's over 50, let the result stand as the %.Ħ. But, if the PC is a drow or half-drow, the desire to seek such proficiency could exist still, finding a mentor is still a problem. Proficiency in weapons use, to me, is something taught to the PC as s/he gains levels/XP and is taught such use by their mentor. The Marilith gets 7 melee attacks (constriction with tail, and 6 arms/weapons.)ģ. The Ettin is already allowed 2 attacks (one with each arm/hand/club). Thus, they can fire once (1 attack) with their missile weapon (crossbow) or 2 with their melee weapons.Ģ. But drow can have 1 or 2 attacks! Yes, because their long dagger qualifies as an OH weapon (dagger or hand ax) in conjunction with their short sword. Can a pc/npc dual-wield darts? They're small, able to be held in one hand and thrown, so why wouldn't darts get the same treatment? Even javelins, light and useable with one hand, why wouldn't a pc/npc be able to hold one in each hand and toss it? Because dual-wielding is found in the section of the DMG regarding Melee. I see things this way right or wrong there it is:ġ. They can be simultaneously Good, Bad, and Ugly.ģ) I'd say 1 slot, but allowed to fighters and thieves (and subclasses).ĥ) 150% of drow have hand crossbows, to allow for those who carry several.Ħ) There's also rose-thorn poison. and aiming at two targets would be VERY hard.Ģ) Thri-kreen boltslinger. The FF describes the crossbow as one-handed, presumably in difference to the standard PHB crossbows, so that is the basis of the questions.ġ) Can a drow dual-wield their crossbow? Do they suffer off-handed penalties (I think drow are supposed to be ambidextrous, though.)Ģ) Could a multi-arm creature such as an ettin (not really multi-armed, but multi-headed)? Perhaps a marilith?ģ) Can a PC gain proficiency? Does it cost the usual slot(s) or more due to exoticism?ĥ) How many actually carry crossbows? Text says 50% or more - how many more? Naturally, up to the DM but is there some recommendation somewhere?Ħ) Are there other poisons than the knockout available?ġ) I would allow it, though reloading would be difficult.
